How to support children after their parents go abroad to work? A summary of the research

In late 2021 and early 2022, we inquired about the situation of children who were left behind after their parents temporarily went abroad to work. We wanted to find out how children's rights (in the areas of education, health, relationships, etc.) are violated in this situation. We also wanted to see how families without fathers could be supported. We were particularly interested in what children think about this, as their point of view is rarely studied and listened to.

The study suggests that the opinions of children who are left behind and their families should also be heard in society. It is important to know their problems and what support they want to receive, as well as what families can improve.

In this overview, we will present examples of good practices that children and families recommend to other families with parents abroad, migrant parents, stay-at-home parents (or other caregivers), or children who stay at home. They will also be useful for professionals, such as policymakers, employees of government agencies and non-governmental organizations, and other professionals who are familiar with the issues of transnational families.
